Barnes & Noble Book Drive - Tribeca (Manhattan) - Through January 1 'Tis the season of giving and now you give to the Brooke Jackman Foundation through Barnes & Noble Tribeca (Manhattan). Through January 1, 2012, books that have been purchased and donated through this store will be distributed directly to the children in our many Brooke Jackman Foundation literacy programs as holiday presents. These gifts will be received by children in underserved communities in and around the New York area who have been victims of domestic violence, are living in homeless shelters or are a part of our other programs.
Last year, your generosity awarded the children of New York with over 1,700 books. We hope to break the 2,000 barrier this season to ensure that as many children as possible have a fun holiday season.

Story Time with the Brooke Jackman Foundation and Children's Author, Stephanie Calmenson at Barnes & Noble TriBeca It was a delightful morning of fun and laughter on December 14, 2010 as beloved children’s author and Brooke Jackman Foundation Advisory Committee member Stephanie Calmenson led a special Story Time at the Barnes & Noble store in TriBeCa. Stephanie read several books from her extensive repertoire, including the ever-popular Dinner at the Panda Palace and Jazzmataz, to a packed-house of toddlers and parents who braved the wintery weather to attend the event. Afterwards, Stephanie stayed for a meet & greet/book signing where she got to meet many of her adorable young fans. The event took place in conjunction with a pre-holiday Brooke Jackman Foundation book drive at the TriBeCa Barnes & Noble location where shoppers were invited to purchase new books to be distributed as holiday gifts to disadvantaged children in the New York area.
Brooklyn native Stephanie Calmenson’s extensive library of fiction and non-fiction books for children includes such favorites as The Principal’s New Clothes, The Teeny Tiny Teacher, May I Pet Your Dog? and Rosie, A Visiting Dog’s Story.
Story Time is an ongoing Brooke Jackman Foundation initiative featuring well-known personalities reading to youngsters. Previous participants have included children’s author Jon Scieszka and actor Alec Baldwin.

The 9th Annual Brooke Jackman Foundation Benefit was held October 21, 2010, 6:30-9:30pm, at Manhattan's New York Palace Hotel. This year, the Foundation proudly honored one of our nation's greatest - even legendary - advocates for youth literacy, Dr. Twila C. Liggett, founder and executive producer of PBS's 26-Emmy-winner, Reading Rainbow. This ground-breaking program has instilled a love of reading in millions of children. Dr. Liggett has now joined the Foundation's inaugural Advisory Committee. We were so proud to recognize Dr. Liggett's remarkable achievements, and gratefully welcome her to the Foundation family. Read more.
Thank you to all the Foundation supporters who attended the Benefit and made it our most successful to date! The Brooke Jackman Foundation Read-a-Thon:September 7, 9-11am at the World Financial Center's Winter Garden in lower Manhattan! This celebration of literacy gathered a cultural cross-section of our tremendous, resilient city, from firefighters - and the Fire Commissioner - and police officers to authors, from political leaders to entertainers, and of course, children - to read aloud as a tribute to Brooke and the Foundation she has inspired. The Read-a-thon was about hope and transforming tragedy into improving the lives of others, especially children, which was Brooke's dream. 200 rapt children joined us, enthralled by the books that kept them riveted to the pages and readers for two hours! The NY Times accompanied the event with a story: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/07/nyregion/07nyc.html?scp=1&sq=jackman&st=cse

3rd Graders Kick Off School with Children's Author Jon Scieszka:
This year's Brooke's Books campaign, in which The Brooke Jackman Foundation delivered books to 10,000 at-risk children throughout New York City, culminated at P.S. 111 in Manhattan on September 10th with a very special guest helping us kick off the new school year: beloved children's author Jon Scieszka.
The eager and very creative third grade class listened raptly as Jon read from several of his classic books. The children proved to be perfect literary partners for Jon, engaging in a lively Q&A session that produced imaginative, giggly and profound observations. The children were inspired to tell their own stories and who knows who will be the next Jon Scieszka?
Our warmest thanks to P.S. 111 for showing such hospitality and joy, particularly to Principal Irma Medina and her amazing, wonderful staff, to Eileen and Sarah for sharing their students with us and of course, to the third grade class of future authors!
Most of all, we are so grateful to Jon Scieszka, the internationally renowned author who was recently named the first National Ambassador of Young People's Literature by the Library of Congress, and his publisher, Simon & Schuster, for enthusiastically diving in to our celebration and making it truly a day to remember. (For more information on Jon and his books, please visit: http://www.jsworldwide.com/)
